That You May Know: A Study in 1 John

with Brad Klassen

“Am I truly saved? Is assurance of salvation ever possible? How can I have confidence that I am going to heaven?” Most likely, someone has asked you how to answer these questions. Undoubtedly, you have asked them yourself.

Some believe that answering such questions is impossible. They contend that assurance of salvation is nothing short of spiritual arrogance. In fact, if you were granted assurance, you would inevitably abuse it as a license for licentious living. Instead—they argue—God keeps you in the dark to motivate you to keep trusting and obeying.

Others believe that the questions should not even be asked. They contend that if you are a part of the right tradition, or if you have been baptized, or if you recited the prayer at the end of a gospel tract, then your destiny is automatically sealed. To even ask these questions is tantamount to blasphemy. You are free to live, even in sin, so that you can prove how grace abounds still more.

Both responses illustrate the extremes of man-made religion. The one embraces the lack of assurance as a manipulative tool. The other offers unqualified and unquestioned assurance as a convenient cover for sin.

To avoid these attractive yet destructive extremes, we must direct these questions to God Himself. They are some of the most important questions we will ever ask. And mercifully, He has not left us without a response.

The letter of 1 John was written primarily to answer questions like these. In fact, the Spirit-superintended writer of the letter—the apostle John—expresses his whole purpose for writing it with these words: “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). God wants us to ask these questions, and He wants us to know the answers.

Beginning September 3, Men of the Word will embark on an important, year-long study of this letter and the light it sheds on the doctrine of assurance. For some, this study will provide the confidence they have been longing for. It will apply the balm for the soul that John so wishes for his readers. For others, this study will tear away false assurance. It will warn about the sinking sand of self-confidence and explain the way of escape. For everyone, this study will focus on the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ—a gospel that is intended to rescue sinners from sin, fear, and damnation and impart transformation, joy, and assurance.

The Pillars of Marriage

with Chris Hamilton

The Pillars of Marriage mini-series is an in-depth look at the Bible’s teaching on the fundamentals of marriage. This teaching is designed to bring men back to the theological and practical essentials of marriage as God has designed it. The series will serve to prepare men for marriage in the future, to strengthen existing marriages, and to equip all men to provide biblical counsel to others in need.
